    So, starting out in a race I can sustain 6.5 or 7.0 mph for about the first mile and then I settle into a cruising speed of around 5.5 mph (a lot of the time it is even slower). Why can’t I sustain that speed longer? Is it a problem of cardio or technique? I’m guessing if I had poor technique that I might not be able to achieve the higher speed at all???

    • Sorry for the delay on this! Must have slipped past me. Anyway, I can’t say definitively that your problem is coming from poor technique or training without seeing you paddle and finding out what your training program looks like. The fact that you have a strong first mile a fast pace tells me that your technique cannot be too terrible.
